Moving landscape in motion picture - the floodplains of South Tyrol

Auenlandschaft bei St. Georgen

Since three years the famous director, DOP and producer Hubert Schönegger is working with his production company geosfilm on the project "floodplains of South Tyrol" for the association "Eisvogel". Now the completion is near, and planned for autumn 2012.

When nature and not man is architect of the landscape, dynamic rivers with numerous loops and gently flowing water are formed. Especially the “Tauferer Arhrntal” with its floodplains is a good example in this gem of South Tyrol.

Undevelpoed shores, wide hedges, dense reed beds and pounds provide habitat for over 260 bird species and over 680 species of butterflies.

The famous nature documentray filmer form Innichen, Hubert Schönegger, with his production company geosfilm will produce a movie on behalf of the association “Eisvogel” on the cutting edge of technology.

With the RED ONE camera that is popular in Hollywood he skilfully will capture nature on high definition pictures.

So even smallest animals like the endangered blue-wing Demoiselle will turn out big. Even the three rare species of crayfish are placed in large scene.

In the midst of special animals, like the Eyed Hawk-Moth, and unusual plants like the highly endangered flowering rush impressing images are created.

Especially modern recording techniques, e.g. HD underwater shots allow a new perspective and offer the viewer new points of view.

It is this flora and fauna that is protected with a new safety concept “Untere Ahr” of the “Abteilung Wasserschutzbauten” of South Tyrol, in combination with an effective flood insulation.

So geosfilm was able to master the challenge and film even rarest animals like the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, which is otherwise hard to see.

The screenplay for the film comes from the nature filmmaker Hubert Schönegger and the president of the association “Eisvogel” Klaus Graber and tells the story of children who are hoping a message in a bottle will bring them somone who helps maintaining this floodplains. This film will be dubbed by the famous Otto Clemens with musical compositions of Hansjörg Mutschlechner.

So, in 45 minutes the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, the kingsfisher, storks, the Yellow-bellied Toad, the Vipera Aspis, the European brook Lamprey, the crayfish and many others make big appearances.

The flora will be studied in an impressive timelapse study. This timelapse study has been running for over a year in the floodplains of Welsberg and paint a detailled picure of the change in the floodplains on single days, but especially over months and the seasons.

Especially the winter season is a challende for filmmakers, to get rare animals on the new HD camera.

However, who the film crew constantly meets in the floodplains is the nature loving hiker and those seeking relaxation. Too bad only, say some, that many aren’t aware of the unique nature and take everything for granted.

In addition to the technical quality of the production by geosfilm the movie is characterized by it’s specialized knowledge. Fot this the support comes form the Innsbruck Alpine Zoo, the National Park “Stilfser Joch”, the “Landesabteilung Natur und Landschaft, Landesabteilung Wasserschutzbauten, Umweltagentur, Amt für Jagd und Fischerei” of South Tyrol and numerous local, national and international experts.

The movie will probably be shown on the channels ZDF, ORF, BR, NDR, and Rai Sender Bozen.

It is financed by the “Landschaftsfonds” South Tyrol, the “Stiftung Südtiroler Sparkasse” and by funds of the association “Eisvogel”.
